Orienteering

On Saturday the 23rd of October, Sharon brought the first and second crews orienteering.

On 23rd October, Sharon came out to Dun Laoghaire to collect a group of first and second crews. We all got onto the sports bus and listened to music as we drove towards the Hell Fire Wood.

When we arrived, Sharon handed out maps and clipboards with pages of questions. We divided into three groups and Sharon gave us a briefing. Wrapped up warmly, we headed off down the forest trail. Soon, with the aid of our maps, we found the first mark to the left hand side of the forest trail. After each mark, we had to answer a question on our clipboards and take down the number on the post. It was quite easy at first but gradually grew harder. We were soon climbing steep hills and after about twenty minutes of searching Charlotte found marker number three under a fallen tree.

At the middle, we came across the Hell Fire Club when searching for a trig. point located on our maps. Sharon told us a spooky story about the club. Completely spooked out of it, we ventured inside and spent the next few minutes exploring the haunted house.

Continuing, on our journey, we found more marks beside large puddles and ponds. The climbing was hard but we proceeded to the final part of our journey. We had to be very quiet towards the end due to the rules of the forest.

Tired and cold, we returned to the sports bus where Sharon handed out hot chocolate and soup. Many of us tried out oxtail soup for the very first time and were allowed to go back for seconds (and sometimes thirds!). We then got back on the bus and took our seats . We arrived back at the club in perfect timing and went home.
