Seaman of the Year Competition

The club held the Seaman of the Year Competition this Saturday.

Last Saturday, the club held a Seaman of the Year Competition for first and second crews. This competition was first started in 1979 when Kyron was starting the club and stopped in the mid-ninties. It was a big event and we decided to bring it back for 2010!

So on Saturday, the competitiors arrived at the club and the event planners were handed out. Everyone competed in several events throughtout the course of the day and depending on their postion in the races, points were awarded.

The day started off slowly as everyone worked together, to launch, two Picos, two sailboards and two kayaks for the races. The wind was slack as they were towed by the rescue crew, Aoife and Leah to the Launch which was tied up between the A and B steps. Leah laid down three marks for the triangular sailing course and then Aoife and Amy set up the first kayak race. The group was split up into two and half went to do their sailing race. It took a while because of the light winds but everyone did very well.

After the first few events, Kyron brought out a surprise for everybody of a burger and a can of Coke each. Aoife gave some a smiley face of tomato ketchup and everyone laughed and joked as they relaxed. Soon they got back to business with the rest of the events!

Some of the events throughout the day included, Speed rigging exercises, Capsizing on both picos and kayaks, Stand up races on the sailboards and kayaks, Races on the kayaks, a race on the punt using a single bladed paddles and other splashy events .

During the afternoon the competition heated up and people got wetter and wetter. It also began to rain but the brave seamen kept going and finished of the competition. They lifted the kayaks, sailboards and picos at about half four and headed back to the club.

Once they were all changed they had a yummy barbecue. Once they were all full and fed they all took their seats and began their written tests. Once they were finished the tests they did their knots exercise, unfortunatley we were running our of time so were unable to include these two events in the final scores but nevertheless everybody passed with flying colours.

After looking at the points for all events the final scores were :

Tom Wall                                        53 points

Molly Rose Lee                              29 points

Nancy Lee                                       43 points

Kevin Bradley                                25 points

 Sam Parker                                   52 points

 Kieran Hall                                    59 points

Charlotte Parker                            60 points

Conor Sharkey                              45 points

Well done to everyone!

And well done to Charlotte 2010's S.M.O.T.Y
